I’ve been too busy to paint as of lately, but I will be running a session for some of the guys at work and my old map (crafted from chinese store supplies) is looking a little too… bland. In my latest trip to the chinese store I noticed these sheets of felt (or some similar material) for a buck each, and it got me thinking…
I brought a few back home (green and gray), and the idea was to draw a grid, then cut 4×4 tile sections so I could build modular dungeons on the go. Plus, piles of little squares are easier to bring with you than a large felt tube.
I opted for 3cm squares for the grid, which will do nicely for all the different sizes of miniature bases I own. The Heroclix ones are a bit larger, but I’m thinking of rebasing those anyways since I hardly ever play the original game. This makes the map 16×16 squares after cutting off the excess, wich is pretty good and a nice round number if I decide to go ahead with the plan of cutting 4×4 sections.
Since I will be running Lost Mines of Phandelver, I also got a large square of fake lawn, that I then chopped up into neat squares to lay out the initial map where the party gets ambushed by Goblins.
All in all I think it looks pretty decent for something that costs 3€ (felt, black marker pen and fake lawn bushes) and I can’t wait to bring it out for the session!
